Does Massage Spread Cancer?
Does massage spread cancer? If you have cancer is it ok to have a massage?
If you are a cancer patient or survivor, is it okay for you to have a massage? The answer is absolutely yes!
I’m cancer physical therapy specialist, Dr. Leslie Waltke, Welcome to The Recovery Room.
There is no evidence, nor has there ever been evidence, that massage can spread cancer cells. As a matter of fact, the American Cancer Society actually recommends massage to help you decrease stress, depression, and anxiety during and after cancer treatment. In our cancer center, we have massage therapists who work on patients while they are getting chemotherapy. So, yes it’s ok, and yes it’s safe. I always say, “my goodness if you don’t need a massage during cancer treatment, when would you”?
If you are currently undergoing treatment, or have bone metastasis, or advanced disease, look for a massage therapist in your community with cancer experience.
Otherwise my friends… “massage away”!!!!
Have a good rest of your day, I’m Dr. Leslie Waltke, signing out from The Recovery Room.
